The setting for the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper extends back to the story of the passover in Egypt in Exodus 12. It centres around the Lamb that was slain for the people of Israel so that their first born sons would not die. The Angel of Death was the final plague on Egypt to force Pharaoh to let God’s people go. The first born of the Egyptians died, but the Israelites were saved and Pharaoh forced them out of the land. Salvation came through the blood of the lamb and it still comes through the shed blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. Just like the Israelites of old, we today need to put our trust in the blood so that God’s wrath against our sin passes over us and is settled on the lamb slain on Calvary’s cross.
